Riding Emotion Waves: Achieving Interpersonal Effectiveness
Riding Emotion Waves is a group based in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) available as an adjunct to individual therapy. This group is suitable for any person at risk of self destructive behaviours, including suicide or self harm. It will benefit people wanting to be more effective in how they experience and respond to emotions. DBT is an evidence based program focusing on skill development in the following areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
Since its inception, DBT has been adapted as a treatment for other complex, difficult-to-treat disorders including co-occurring conditions. Balancing acceptance and change strategies, DBT calls on the patient and the therapist to accept the often difficult nature of everyday life while maintaining a strong and conscious commitment to change.
Research has shown DBT to effectively reduce suicidal behaviour and psychiatric hospitalization, anger and interpersonal difficulties, as well as providing a means to effectively address an individual’s tendency to discontinue with treatment prior to achieving his or her desired outcome. DBT has been most recently found to work well for people grappling with a range of urges and impulses, and as such has shown practical gain for people with Substance Use binging, Bulimia Nervosa, Body Dimorphic Disorder, Skinpicking, and other impulse control issues.
This Group Program will have a Thursday and Saturday group. For more information on the Thursday group click here. More information on the Saturday group is coming soon.
Mindful Mumma’s
Psychological interventions based on mindfulness skills are an increasingly popular means of treatment various psychological issues, such as stress, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and adjustment to major life changes (Baer, 2003).
Developing mindfulness involves purposefully directing one’s attention to internal and external experiences, occurring on a moment-to-moment basis without evaluating or judging these experiences. When practised, mindfulness can become a way of living, where a person find themselves more actively involved in the present experience in a way that generates wellbeing, even at those times of life that include discomfort and angst. This is an advantage when new parents are faced with the sometimes welcomed yet challenging task of bonding or parenting a child. In Mindful Mammas’ new mothers will come together with their children to enhance their ability to release fears and stresses associated with the transition to motherhood, childbirth, bonding, and parenting, even during the most challenging of days. Mindful Mummas’ is a practical, hands on, and nurturing approach to genuinely connecting with ourselves and our children.
